Overview

We are seeking an intelligent, hard-working, and dynamic individual to serve as a data scientist focusing on Pathology AI within the AI Operations and Data Science Services group -- a group serving some of the most prominent research and clinical programs at the Institute, from basic to translational research, to clinical deployment, and operationalization. The group encompasses expertise in AI, data science, machine learning, NLP, computer vision, production deployment, cloud infrastructure, data engineering, project management standards, and data labeling. The group seeks to develop a highly interdisciplinary environment supporting our research, clinical and operational staff to advance the overall mission of DFCI which is to provide expert, compassionate care to children and adults with cancer while advancing the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure, and prevention of cancer and related diseases.

As we widen our support of several crucial centers and programs at DFCI, we seek an energetic and motivated data scientist who will contribute to designing, implementing, and deploying computational image analysis pipelines to support the Institute’s various initiatives in digital pathology. The candidate will serve as the data science domain expert on highly interdisciplinary, collaborative projects, ranging from hypothesis-driven research projects to building institutional-scale computational infrastructure to enhance and improve the Institute’s capabilities across entire departments and centers. Key technical responsibilities will include training and evaluating ML models, building and maintaining data pipelines, and contributing to software tools developed internally and used by collaborators, and establishing machine learning and data management best practices. The successful candidate will also bring strong communication and collaboration skills, with proven experience working on large complex projects, meeting deadlines, and managing relationships with key stakeholders.

Level to be determined based on experience (Data Scientist I / Data Scientist II / Sr. Data Scientist)

Requirements

The key responsibilities and requirements will be:

  • Working with the area leader for Pathology AI to support their tasks in managing internal research clients and leading and executing projects end-to-end as required, as well as leading certain aspects of the Pathology AI area (e.g., Client management, certain technical projects, etc.)
  • Consulting with scientists, identifying their needs from a data science and data infrastructure perspective, and designing and implementing plans and solutions to address these gaps
  • Delivery of results for projects on-time and on-budget
  • Working as part of the broader team to identify longer-term solutions that will improve quality, speed and efficacy of our current projects and programs
  • Evaluating and benchmarking new libraries; prototype and pipeline development.
  • Mentor and supervise junior personnel, scoping and delegating work to Associate Data Scientists and/or Data Science Interns and Trainees, as well as supporting them during their projects in order to deliver new and ambitious goals in the group
  • Consistently track all activities in project management tools; work with Project Manager as required
  • Demonstrate excellent soft-skills, such as excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills
  • Contribute to scientific manuscripts and presentations as required
  • Possibly, attract new research clients
  • Actively contribute to the growth of the AI Operations and Data Science Services group, in terms of scope, access, responsibilities, and new projects that are trusted with the group
  • Support the I&A Department and the Institute as a whole, should be the baseline mentality
  • Requirements :

  • Deep AI / data science skills, at the interface between computer science and statistics
  • MS in quantitative field such as data science, computer science, applied mathematics, or equivalent experience with evidence of impact in data science applied to real life problems (e.g., some quant master courses AND experience in data science internship) in research setting ideally within a clinical or research environment
  • Experience with data science methodologies and techniques, (e.g., hypothesis testing, classification, regression, clustering, feature allocation, deep learning, time-series analysis, network modeling, feature selection/engineering)
  • Strong proficiency in Python. Key domains include: machine learning, image processing, distributed/high-performance computing, MLOps
  • Strong knowledge of image processing and computer vision techniques
  • Familiarity with Jupyter Lab, linux, and git
  • Excellent communication skills, collaborative mindset, effective problem-solving skills, track record in serving a variety of diverse customers and projects
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage people if needed, within an environment with ever changing priorities
  • Qualifications

    Preferred Qualifications :

  • Preferred 1 to 5 years of experience post MS or PhD
  • Experience in project management and in client management is preferred
  • Experience working with pathology images preferred (e.g., H&E, IHC, IF, spatial omics, volumetric imaging, etc.)
  • Experience with theory and/or practice of microscopy is a BIG plus
  • Experience with design and development of open-source software/tools (software design best practices, unit testing, integration testing, packaging, documentation, etc.) is a plus
  • Domain knowledge of cancer biology, histology, immunology, oncology, cancer genetics, is a nice to have
  • At Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, we work every day to create an innovative, caring, and inclusive environment where every patient, family, and staff member feels they belong. As relentless as we are in our mission to reduce the burden of cancer for all, we are equally committed to diversifying our faculty and staff.
