This role will require a one year assignment to the Digital Aviation Systems (DAS) team to focus on project execution for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) related activities. Following the project role, this person will then transition to assist with the Mode -S Beacon Replacement Radar System (MSBRS) project. The team has identified an urgent need to grow its systems engineering team capabilities by adding qualified technical engineers in the Syracuse, NY, office. Thales provides mission critical services to airlines, airports, and air navigation service providers around the world. Thales has created a new software as a service (SaaS) model aimed at improving aeronautical operations by leveraging cloud based technologies (machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc.). The provision of capabilities for enabling safe and efficient operation of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) - also called UAS Traffic Management (UTM) - is a growing market need and one application targeted by this new product. Thales is seeking outstanding engineering professionals to assist with the development and deployment of this breakthrough capability. Similarly, Thales is a large, radar systems engineering solutions provider and is currently supplying the US FAA and DoD with a surveillance capability that will upgrade airspace surveillance in the United States. This position has the potential to be done remotely.Key Responsibilities:Participate in the definition of future concepts and systems, taking account of operational constraints and new functions that are required, as well as emerging technologiesLead different systems engineering efforts - a 'hands on' role both managing engineering resources as well as participating in the system engineering effortConduct studies, perform system requirements analysis, formalize requirements, assesses feasibility, and produce models / simulations / demonstrators. Provide product teams with the data required for designing the system; define performanceWrite, in a concise and precise manner, specification and interface documents to formalize system content, interfaces and featuresCollaborate with the solution development teams to create and implement a solution development plan which will achieve technical, operational and market requirements (including necessary documentation and design/project reviews)Contribute to the development and plan for implementation and validation of the solutions including verification and validation activities to ensure compliance to performance and safety requirementsContribute to the solution roadmap management as well as the business development / marketing strategyInterface in a constructive manner with internal and external teams/partners (product teams, laboratories, universities, government agencies, SMEs, etc.) to ensure successful progress toward solution development and deploymentContribute to technical proposal/task order preparation and reviewPerform technical customer presentations and organize, setup and perform customer demonstrationsAct as thought leader participating in working groups, standards bodies and industry eventsAcquire and disseminate market intelligence and competitors' knowledgeBuild and maintain product maturity in a "Minimum Viable Product" approachRequired Skills and Experience:5 to 7 years of experience in software intensive system design and developmentBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent degree in a comparable field with a minimum of 5 to 8+ years of experience, or a Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent degree in a comparable field with a minimum of 4+ years of experience.Extensive experience with primary and secondary radar solutions within defense or aviationA thorough knowledge of SW-based systems engineering and verification/validationExperience designing, developing and integrating complex systemsKnowledge of web based applications (HTML5, API, web services, JSON, etc)Cloud hosting experience (Azure, AWS, etc.)Hands on team leadership with strong interpersonal skillsExcellent organizational skills and work ethicEffective oral and written communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projectsAbility to work in a team environment and interact with local/remote employees in a multicultural teamHigh attention to detailWillingness to support product line architecture principles and avoid "not invented here" behaviorAgility and flexibility to work in a dynamic market with considerable ambiguity and uncertaintyExpertise in surveillance data processing and/or command and control solutions for on-board UAS tracking and command and controlPreferred Qualifications:Knowledge of aeronautical / Air Traffic Management data, systems & cultureKnowledge of UAS platformsExperience of the full systems engineering lifecycleExperience of CSCI and systems integration & test activities - Ideally working on ATM systems. requirements management safety management maintenance of baseline documentation compliance with national and international standardsSpanish / French Language Skills PreferredAre you ready to be part of something big?
