The UnitedHealthcare Behavioral Health National Medical Director is responsible for developing, directing, and evaluating strategy, activities, operations, and results of behavioral health care services, with the primary goal of delivering high-quality, high-value care and services by:

  • Ensuring that all behavioral care-related processes deliver high quality care to members, that these processes are efficient, effective, and streamlined, and are re-engineered when necessary
  • Implementing strategies and tracking, reviewing, and analyzing operational and performance metrics to enhance patient and provider experience and optimize patient access
  • Enhancing financial and cost-effective performance
  • Managing risk and enhancing quality
  • Understanding, monitoring, and adhering to regulatory requirements
  • Operationalizing UHC/UHG strategic planning goals and initiatives in integrated behavioral care
  • Promoting data driven decision making
  • Maintaining keen awareness of service delivery models to the applicable population
  • Providing expertise to the enterprise in behavioral health prevention, management, intervention, and treatment

    The Behavioral Health Medical Director provides clinical leadership and oversight to a multidisciplinary team, works collaboratively to develop, and implement innovative integrated behavioral health models, and aligns strategic goals with business objectives.

    Primary Responsibilities:

  • Drive integrated care program development, special projects, and oversee implementation of new processes, including those related to Mental Health Parity
  • Improve clinical effectiveness leveraging performance data variance analyses, and aggregate trend analyses. Make recommendations for changes in practice including substance use services and integrated behavioral health
  • Ensuring delivery of cost-effective quality care that incorporates recovery, resiliency, and person-centered services
  • Responsible for oversight and management of utilization review, management, and care coordination activities for UHC and delegated entities including Optum Behavioral Health
  • Providing clinical oversight to the clinical staff, oversee the management of services at all levels of care in the benefit plans ensuring appropriate utilization (over/under) and parity between medical surgical and behavioral health/substance abuse services 
  • Keeping current regarding Evidence Based Practices and treatment philosophies including those that address Recovery and Resilience and foster a culture of innovation
  • Review workflows and operational processes and make recommendations to enhance program efficacy and efficiency
  • Partner with the line of business Chief Medical Officers to ensure internal and external reporting meet defined requirements
  • Manage relationships with enterprise BH stakeholders to enhance service delivery
  • Collaborate with network and business leaders to expand access to care – including integrating care into physical health practices and telemedicine
  • Ensuring systematic screening for behavioral health related disorders by using standardized and/or evidence-based approaches and develop programs to support members with care needs to access care
  • Conceiving, designing, and implementing BH dashboard and metrics to track and report on performance and to foster data driven decision making

    Required Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy
  • Current active/unrestricted license to practice as a physician without restrictions (in any state)
  • Active ABPN (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology) Board Certification
  • The National Medical Director must have strong clinical skills with 15+ years of healthcare experience and 5+ years in a leadership role in a health system, clinical practice or a payer
  • At least 5 years of experience as a practicing psychiatrist post residency
  • Demonstrated expertise in integrated behavioral health care delivery models; leadership and clinical experience in a large integrated healthcare delivery system
  • Demonstrated understanding of the clinical application of the principles of engagement, empowerment, rehabilitation, and recovery
  • Knowledge of post-acute care planning such as care transitions, home care, discharge planning, care coordination, case management, and disease management
  • Knowledge of reimbursement models, coding, billing processes, pre-certification, and the overall revenue cycle
  • Strong knowledge of health care utilization data and analytics
  • Proficient in interpreting studies of clinical models and guiding improvement plans
  • Proven ability to identify an improvement opportunity through data, implement a solution and achieve measurable impact. Solid data analysis and interpretation skills; Metrics driven
  • Ability/experience in developing collaborative relationships with health system clinical leadership
  • Superior presentation skills for both clinical and non-clinical audiences
  • Proven ability to develop relationships with network and community physicians and other providers
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Strong team player and team building skills
  • Strategic thinking with proven ability to communicate a vision and drive results
  • Solid negotiation and conflict management skills
  • Creative problem-solving skills

    Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado / Connecticut / Nevada residents is $169,500 to $322,500.
