Job Description Summary

This position is responsible for the Commercial Lines underwriting activities and selecting profitable business. This position requires the use sound underwriting judgment within company guidelines and corporate market direction for specific agents within assigned territory to achieve loss ratio and growth objectives. Administers and monitors underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules and laws/regulations. Works as part of an overall team to promote achievement of objectives within the agency group. Serves as technical resource in multi-line underwriting environment and principle contact for agents; monitors agency performance, recommends and executes remedial action plans to address quality of business, flow, mix, penetration, etc. Resolves billing and other agents' service requests; participates in the agency review process in support of territorial initiatives. Effectively manages the decision-making process and maintains MSA/agent standards through knowledge and application of corporate business process procedures, effective communication and overall agent relationship management skills.
Job Description

• Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Risk management, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics or Business preferred; minimum of Associate's degree or combination of secondary education (and/or other related certifications preferred, such as CPCU, CIC, etc.) and comparable, progressive experience.
• Commercial Lines product knowledge and 2+ years relevant experience including underwriting and customer relationship experience in the Property and Casualty insurance industry; multi-lines underwriting experience preferred.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must possess ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the company with internal and external customers, agents, vendors, etc.
• Proficiency and proven skill in use of computer programs, including strong knowledge and utilization of Microsoft Office applications
• Ability to maintain composure, exercise good judgment and act in a professional manner when challenged; ability to build and sustain positive and collaborative working relationships.
• Strong conceptual and analytical ability; decision-making and proven negotiation skills a must.

  • Finalize the underwriting narrative and model and/or provide direction to underwriting staff
  • Understand credit structures for underwriting commercial loans and adhere to company policies and procedures
  • Affecting ISO's commercial lines insurance programs
  • Perform financial analysis for large commercial deals
  • Participate in RT underwriting projects
  • Make presentations to clients regarding underwriting topics
  • Evaluating new or renewal high-value commercial underwriting application policies and evaluates the merits of each line of insurance based on current laws or level of underwriting expertise
  • Rate, issue and maintain commercial policies
  • Using proprietary models and own underwriting expertise
  • Use analytical skills to make sound risk selection and manage a commercial underwriting territory
  • Provide training to new employees
