The Education Standards Specialist, under the direction of the Senior Manager, Clinical Advisory and collaboration with CDI Physician Advisors will have the responsibility to create the curriculum for physicians and CDI across the system. This role requires a deep understanding of clinical indicators and best practice documentation standards in order for PSJH to set the standard nationally as the benchmark in clinical documentation integrity. The Education Standards Specialist is a highly visible role within the organization who will set the curriculum for CDI and physician documentation education that the CDI Educators will utilize in educating their CDS and Physician customers.

The Education Standards Specialist plays a supporting role in the overall quality improvement process of medical record documentation. This position has the responsibility to develop educational materials for high complex matters in a fashion that facilitates ease of understanding to a broad audience. This position will collaborate with medical staff on the latest clinical guidelines in an effort to support the true clinical picture thru documentation.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the development and dissemination of a clinical documentation curriculum to the CDI Educators.

  • Identifies and creates easy to understand clinical documentation guidelines for high complexity issues.

  • Acts as a SME for clinical documentation content and guidelines.

  • Continually develops and learns organizational and national documentation improvement opportunities.

  • Works closely and collaboratively with CDI Physician Advisors

  • Ensures that new and existing educational material is in compliance with enterprise and national standards.

  • Educates CDS and Providers on identified knowledge gaps thru the development of the educational curriculum.

  • Stays updated on CDI-related literature, participates in work groups, and serves as a mentor to CDI Educators.

  • Able to breakdown raw information and undefined problems into specific workable components thru the educational process that in-turn clearly identifies the issues at hand.

  • Identifies and acts upon opportunities. Motivates others during times of organizational stress, ambiguity, and change. Creates an environment that encourages prudent risk-taking, sharing of best practices, and alerting groups to alternative approaches.

  • Maintains and applies up-to date knowledge of current clinical documentation practices to ensure the medical record accurately reflects patient care and ensures proper coding including MS-DRG, APR-DRG, ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS codes

  • Provides ongoing education to the CDI Educators to ensure that the curriculum is delivered accurately to their audience.

  • Serves as CDI expert resource to the organization.

  • Researches coding updates, new procedures, and disease pathophysiology and documentation requirements. Provide presentation/educational materials (recognized resources) to CDI, Physicians, and Coding staff.

  • Promotes compliance with CMS, Medicare documentation, third party payers, coding, and billing regulations.

  • Qualifications:

    Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, healthcare, education or other related field (Foreign Medical Graduate)

  • Eight (8) years RN, PA, Foreign Medical Graduate, or Healthcare Educator in a multi-hospital integrated delivery network health system

  • One (1) year ICD-10 experience and/or understanding

  • One (1) year understanding of MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment and fundamentals of establishing a DRG.

  • Maintains a high degree of professionalism

  • Develops and delivers effective presentations

  • Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills

  • Demonstrates a high level of accuracy, even under pressure

  • Licensed Registered Nurse, PA, Foreign Medical Graduate, CDIP, or CCDS

  • Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in Business Administration, Health Administration, Education, Health Services, or related area of study

  • Five (5) years clinical experience in an acute care setting

  • Two (2) years knowledge-base of current technological trends and developments in adult learner education
