OptumLabs serves as UnitedHealth Group’s research and development hub. Our vision is to create the most effective, affordable, equitable, and engaging health care solutions that improve patient health outcomes and experience, enhance provider experience, bolster health equity, and make health care more affordable. Our teams leverage big data insights, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and disruptive product development while capitalizing on engineering, clinical, and scientific innovations to build innovative health solutions.

OptumLabs seeks a Principal Data Scientist to be a deep healthcare data and analytic SME working to consolidate data pipelines, enrichments, and data models across analytic data warehouses. You will have very deep understanding of analytic application in healthcare business and clinical domains and leverage that expertise in driving consolidation and rationalization of analytic warehouses. You will partner with our business teams, privacy & compliance, engineering teams, analytics and other end-users of our data products. You will have accountability for consolidation of analytic warehouses and data products. You will be a data and analytics SME more so than a technologist.

You’ll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Partner with our delivery leaders to understand the existing platforms and chart a plan for systematic consolidation of analytics warehouses, data products, and associated enrichment and transformation processes
  • Rationalize data needs of analytic teams and consolidation of enrichments, transformations, data models, etc. Inform our point of view on how these should change, as we migrate to the public cloud from on-prem SQL environments
  • You will be a hands-on analyst/developer
  • Develop roadmaps, manage backlogs, lead POC’s, etc. to improve data processes, create efficiencies and deliver value
  • Partner with engineering partners to reduce/eliminate the need for manual intervention in routine ETL/ELT data operations and drive to end-to-end automation
  • Your focus will be on the analytic and data rationalization and less so on the technical/engineering optimization
  • Be a data Subject Matter Expert (SME) across our enterprise data products and become our platform SME
  • Manage, mentor, and lead analysts, data scientists, data delivery teams, and engineers, who are part of our extended team
  • You’ll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

    Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience managing data or analytic platforms with client delivery accountability
  • 7+ years of experience leading consolidation of data products and analytics warehouses
  • 7+ years of experience with healthcare data knowledge and understanding across multiple assets (e.g. administrative claims, hospital billing/discharge, EMR, inventory/supplies for healthcare, etc.)
  • Experience with delivering data as products with client or commercial accountability
  • Experience with downstream application of data and analytics in healthcare business and clinical setting
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Big data and public cloud migration experience
  • Experience working in an ambiguous, complex environment and assisting in creating order, clear roadmaps, and a path forward
  • Experience working in highly matrixed organizations; natural collaborator
  • Healthcare data and data models experience
  • Ability to mentor/teach and communicate the value and rationale of different data needs, enrichments, and data model approaches
  • AI/ML experience
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination is an essential requirement of this role. UnitedHealth Group will adhere to all federal, state and local regulations as well as all client requirements and will obtain necessary proof of vaccination prior to employment to ensure compliance
  • UnitedHealth Group requires all new hires and employees to report their COVID-19 vaccination status.
