Job Description

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) at BD is responsible for scientific interactions with external customers to ensure the appropriate use of BD products. S/he communicates and shares information with internal and external stakeholders and obtains insights from customers to understand unmet medical needs regarding BD products. The therapeutic focus of this MSL role is Urology for existing products and new product launches. Clinical expertise, interpersonal and presentation skills are required to ensure robust scientific exchange and to address the educational needs of various audiences (clinicians, such as physicians, nurses, and hospital personnel).

The MSL will engage with appropriate clinicians (primarily in the areas of Urology, Female Pelvic Medicine/Urogynecology, Geriatrics, Rehabilitation Medicine, Critical Care and Long-Term care) including physicians, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and others as needed, in order to discuss appropriate use of products, and to provide clinical training at the request of customers. The position requires clinical expertise in Urology to effectively engage with stakeholders who use Urology related products. Experience in Critical Care Medicine is a plus since many of the Urology products are used in this setting as well.

MSLs are available to address gaps in understanding to ensure appropriate use of products and the safety of patients. Through peer-to-peer discussions with appropriate HCPs and their staffs, MSL’s can provide classroom or hands-on training, clinical presentations of the product and/or education on the disease management. 

The candidate will work closely with the director of medical affairs, managers and associates to understand not only the product and services offered, but also the requirements and objectives for product materials. The MSL will provide insights gathered from key opinion leaders, healthcare and scientific organizations, scientific meetings, and the medical literature, and communicate these findings to key cross functional partners internally. The MSL may lead or collaborate on developing and publishing scientific abstracts and manuscripts in peer reviewed journals including developing clinical study synopsis, identifying critical study endpoints and collaborating with researchers. In addition, the MSL will assist in developing the clinical evidence strategy for the business, review outside grant requests as well as advertising promotional material for internal and external users.

Functional Responsibilities:

  • MSL is responsible for fair-balanced exchange of clinical information to answer clinical questions, including unsolicited questions about disease states to healthcare professionals.

  • The MSL must be able to critically analyze the medical literature and engage in study and manuscript development and editing. 

  • Work with BD sales consultants and BD Institutional Representatives to ensure clinical input into the content of educational programs.

  • Explain disease management practices and guidelines upon request

  • Develop education and training programs to HCP audiences on BD product requirements that include accurate data interpretation.

  • The MSL will also train BD technical support, sales associates, application specialists and other BD staff. 

  • Improves clinician education and engagement through educational and clinical support.

  • Uncovers and shares changes in clinical practice and any impact on our products in a timely and appropriate manner.

  • Engage KOL’s to stay up to date with the latest clinical trends which may include developing and participating/leading advisory boards and peer-to-peer discussions.

  • Continually review the medical literature to ensure an in-depth understanding of the latest science, and actively participate in internal journal clubs and business/strategy discussions to share that knowledge with the team.

  • Must have knowledge of statistics and data analysis.

  • The role will include up to 50% US travel with some overseas travel.

  • Experience and Education:

  • Physician, Physician Assistant, or Nursing Degree with at least (3) three years of clinical experience in Urology. Additional experience in critical care is a plus.

  • History of developing and participating in clinical studies and a thorough understanding of the clinical study process. Authoring scientific publications in the past is preferred.

  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and presentation skills, with the ability to multi-task on several projects.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills. Ability to adjust to multiple communication styles.

  • Ability to identify unmet medical, educational and research needs within the medical community.

  • Critical thinking, strategic, and analytical skills and a team approach to problem solving and decision making.

  • Must possess a positive “can-do” attitude.

  • Team player and working well with others.

  • Must be able to synthesize evidence-based research.

  • Licenses or Certifications

  • MD/DO, RN, BSN or PA
