Symetra has an excellent opportunity to join our Life Underwriting team as a Manager of Underwriting!
About the role Provides direction, guidance and oversight of services for department staff engaged in appraising and underwriting applications for life insurance, assessing mortality and morbidity within company guidelines. Builds expertise of technically competent underwriters. Responsible for results of team in meeting company's financial objectives as well as ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory and legal requirements. May underwrite the larger, more complex life insurance applications. Identifies opportunities for profitable growth in order to achieve a balanced, sound and quality book while protecting company's assets. Establishes and maintains effective relationships with service and industry partners.
What you will do

  • Select, train and develop technically proficient underwriting staff. Serve as a referral underwriter for underwriting staff. Apply advanced level of expertise to analyze data prepared by underwriting staff and use letters of authority to provide for approval for risk selection and acceptance, coverage and price. Recommend alternatives with regard to rating plans, coverages and payment plans. Apply advanced level of expertise and judgment to analyze key metrics and underwriting results and identify areas for improvement. Review new business trends and results to recommend and implement action plans to produce profitable underwriting results
  • Develop and maintain highly effective business relationship with assigned clients and brokers, as well as internal and other external clients in order to attract, develop and retain profitable business for the division
  • Maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements as well as internal policies, procedures and processing standards. Audit accounts and provide feedback to underwriters

Who you are
  • At least 7 years of underwriting management experience, experience managing an underwriting team remotely is a plus; HS diploma required, bachelor's degree preferred
  • CLU, FALU and/or FLMI, or working towards completion of designation is strongly preferred
  • Mastery of underwriting principals, practices, insurance medicine, financial underwriting, field operations, product offerings and life insurance contract law
  • Strong technical and financial underwriting skills with an approval authority limit of at least 10 million (approx. 10-12 million range); BGA market experience is a strong plus
  • Advance/solid understanding of reinsurance manuals
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle large case loads and provide quick turnaround times while maintaining Symetra's mortality standards
  • Service oriented with commitment to meet deadlines; able to prioritize and handle several tasks in a demanding work environment
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with an ability to communicate effectively across all levels within the organization including external partners and/or clients
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Ability to travel and make presentations to clients and producers; travel 2-3 times per year (i.e. MA, FL, AZ)
