The Hartford is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the Global Specialty IT Site Reliability Organization. You will have end-to-end accountabilities across the Global Specialty IT application portfolio, ranging from advanced digital storefronts to mainframe platforms. You will be also responsible for working with the Platform team to build and improve the infrastructure for development and production environments, and ensure the systems are stable, performant, and secure.

Responsibilities and Competencies for the role include:

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship.
  • Guide software development teams to instrument their code to generate relevant metrics for performance and quality.
  • Implement and maintain a cost effective monitoring solution for all environments.
  • Implement and enhance the tools and technology to monitor and measure system availability, latency, and overall health.
  • Update system configurations and provide recommendations on how to automate and help scale systems based on performance metrics.
  • Function as the go-to technical leader for the software applications supported, requiring depth and breadth of knowledge in technologies, applications, integration, interfaces and business domain.
  • Ensure operational excellence. Independently drive the triaging and service restoration of all high impact incidents in order to minimize the mean time to service restoration and impact to business.
  • Partner with the infrastructure organization in designing and implementing intelligent incident routing, enhanced monitoring/alerting capabilities and automated service restoration processes. Take proactive measures to prevent high impactful incidents.
  • Ensure availability, recoverability and currency (ARC) for all the applications and drive to a top quartile capability.
  • Accountable for keeping the IT application and infrastructure metadata repositories (PlanIT and CMDB) current in partnership with the vendor partner support team.
  • Champion the migration of applications to open source platforms and enable containerization and deployment to public cloud.
  • Own and drive adoption of DevOps tools and best practices across the application portfolio.
  • Drive simplification across the stack, responsible for ensuring that all technical designs can be effectively operated without adding technical complexity.
  • Investigate, design and deploy a minimum of 2 technical innovation ideas annually.
  • Serve as key liaison between the architecture and technical delivery teams to influence the technical strategy for the organization, keeping in mind its cross-functional impacts, integration across the organization, and architecture rationalization.
  •  Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science or related disciple with a 7+ years of work experience in IT systems analysis, design and application development and tech leadership.
  • Hands on development experience with Microsoft Development Stack – ASP.NET and Core MVC framework, ESB – NServiceBUS (msmq), REST and SOAP services, C#, Jquery, bootstrap css and signal R
  • IIS on Windows Servers (20xx)
  • Strong understanding of XML and XSLT.
  • Experience with continuous integration and DevOps methodologies, preferred tools such as Teams Foundation Server (TFS), Azure DevOps, GitHub, Jenkins, Nexus, Rally, Jira, SonarQube etc.
  • Hands on experience with performance monitoring and exposure to Dynatrace is required.
  • Nice to Have Experience:

  • Experience in front end web technologies and frameworks like HTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX, JSON. Experience in SRL, Angular Typescript are preferred. 
  • Development experience with Mobile Frameworks and Java Script libraries – AngularJS, Bootstrap, JQuery
  • Thorough understanding and experience with Oracle and SQL Server relational database technologies. Knowledge of open source database technologies is beneficial. Understanding of linux RHEL, JBoss EAP is a plus.
  • Understanding of integration components such as MQ, Datapower and WMB.
  • Knowledge of containerization and experience in cloud infrastructure environments like Openshift AWS, Azure is an advantage.
  • Compensation

    The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

    $112,960 - $169,440
