Sr. Accountant/Accountant, IFRS Financial Technical Analysis

The Financial Services Group of Crum & Forster (C&F) is looking for a dynamic Senior/Staff Accountant, with some exposure to accounting and the insurance industry, to join the Financial Technical Analysis group and be a key team member to assist with the implementation of the new accounting standard - IFRS 17- Insurance Contracts. The individual will work closely with key stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand the business, solicit and document requirements, testing, reconciliations, posting critical IFRS 17 journal entries and overall support with the implementation of this new accounting standard. The implementation efforts will also involve RiskIntegrity, a cloud based software, based on the instructions received from Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, our parent company. The senior/staff accountant should be proactive, a quick learner, able to handle a fast paced environment, take responsibility of work and have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Location : Morristown, New Jersey

We currently have a flexible office/remote working arrangement. Some work in the office may be anticipated in the future.

What you will do:

  • Support the implementation of IFRS 17, the new insurance contracts accounting standard, and associated projects based on the instructions from our parent company, Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, including the implementation of the Moody’s RiskIntegrity software.
  • Compare the input data against output data prepared by the KPMG IT team which is used for the Proof of Concepts “POCs” as well as production to ensure the data was transformed using the business logic provided by C&F.
  • Document, in detail, the logic and overall process of Proof of Concepts or any other development where necessary.
  • Examine and generate possible solutions to issues that may arise working on the Proof of Concepts or testing data.
  • Read and interpret required IFRS 17 accounting literature and related documentation.
  • Complete required write-ups with comprehensive analysis and application to C&F.
  • Assist to evaluate design of controls in accordance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.
  • Serve as a liaison with external consultant, internal and external auditors.
  • Work closely with the KPMG IT team, C&F IT team, Financial and Actuarial to ensure accounting treatment is being adhered to for all accounting guidelines within the IFRS 17 standard, as well as instructions given by our parent company.
  • Communicate and coordinate any larger issues and mitigation plans with the appropriate management.
  • Prepare journal entries that satisfy IFRS 17 accounting standards.
  • Assistance with the balance sheets and income statements prepared in accordance with IFRS 17.
  • Support with reconciliations for senior management between IFRS 4 (previous insurance contracts standard) and IFRS 17,
  • What you will bring to C&F:

  • Bachelors of Science in Accounting.
  • Public Accounting experience and/or insurance experience is a plus.
  • Possess a basic understanding of property and casualty insurance accounting principles.
  • Strong accounting skills.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Experience with Excel, Word and Outlook (VLOOKUP, Pivot Table, Power BI, SUMIF preferred).
  • Some exposure and knowledge of general ledger software is a plus.
  • Some exposure and knowledge of SQL is a plus.
  • Ability to work and communicate well with other staff and other functional departments within the organization.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced, dynamic and changing environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across the organization and with external stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
