New Product Development (NPD) is responsible for sourcing and launching new businesses across the healthcare industry. Serving as a major growth engine for Optum, NPD works closely with Optum leadership and collaborates with existing business unit leaders and innovation teams to generate growth from "white space" opportunities, with a special emphasis on ideas that span industry sub-sectors.

NPD teams enjoy unparalleled access to the executives at the leading healthcare organizations in the United States and to major investors and prominent leaders in the industry. Managing Directors manage small teams to independently source, lead and manage new product initiatives, including scoping inquiries, conducting research to define offerings and performing analysis to justify investment. Managing Directors also serve as the general manager, or business owner, on an interim or permanent basis to ensure initiatives achieve scale necessary for successful transition into an existing business or new entity.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Set vision and strategy for white space businesses and cross-BU growth opportunities
  • Own investment case for new businesses/opportunities and secure funding
  • Oversee market analysis, including market testing and competitive landscape
  • Develop a network across the enterprise to influence and align key stakeholders toward a shared vision
  • Recruit client innovation partners and lead sales and delivery of early solution pilots
  • Manage business financial projections and capital budgeting efforts
  • Develop product roadmaps for new solutions
  • Manage and develop project team and support hiring and onboarding new department staff

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 12+ years of relevant experience inclusive of management consulting, healthcare strategy or business product development.
  • Experience in developing growth strategies for organization(s), particularly around new business lines
  • Experience working in a team environment, as well as independently and autonomously
  • Experience managing and leading teams
  • Experience conducting root-cause analysis
  • Experience working with clients in a consultative role - comfort engaging senior level people in back-and-forth conversation, ability to be convincing when necessary, and ability to develop strong relationships through each interaction

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA or other advanced degree
  • Healthcare experience
  • P&L or new venture ownership

Colorado Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $110,200 to $211,700.
