The Director Clinical Practice Lead will be a part of a team responsible for the development, implementation, and long-term management of Optum's Inpatient Case Management and Clinical Variation solution for a strategic client partnership. The successful candidate must be passionate about improving care delivery, effective at collaborating in a fast-paced environment and confident in their interactions with senior leaders (C-suite), providers, and business partners.

The Director Clinical Practice Lead will lead the Clinical Variation solution in partnership with Optum leadership, overseeing Optum and client teams focused on reducing unnecessary variation, improving efficiency in care delivery and achieving health system financial sustainability. This proactive, client-savvy professional will ensure seamless, consistent delivery across Optum business units and key client services, working to execute highest priority initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee clinical variation service deployment and closely monitor performance at a strategic client partnership, working with finance and operations to ensure financial viability and operational excellence
  • Provide clinical and business subject matter expertise to Optum and client teams to drive financial and quality outcomes within long-term transformational partnerships
  • Structure complex care delivery challenges into frameworks that can be analyzed and solved, and coordinate integration of Optum solutions across the continuum of care
  • Lead and oversee cross-functional teams through assessment, opportunity identification, solution design and implementation, including presenting executive level reports and outcomes
  • Partner with client executives and physician leadership to align clinical variation initiatives with strategic client goals and support change management
  • Build trusting relationships with senior leaders, clinicians, and client stakeholders, leading with influence to drive change
  • Ensure that client expectations and contract deliverables are met or exceeded during engagement and manage relationship with client executive sponsor
  • Support the creation of sales pursuit materials and other business development activities (e.g. proposals and Change Notices)
  • Oversee and manage team members either directly or through a matrixed, client-based environment, providing clear communication, delegation, and coaching
  • Support the ongoing design and optimization of best practice methodologies in clinical transformation

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Nursing, Business, or healthcare related field
  • 7+ years professional experience in acute care hospital operations and/or healthcare consulting and/or management consulting
  • Microsoft Suite expertise
  • Ability to travel regionally up 50- 80% when approved by COVID-19 travel guidelines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration or Business Administration
  • Deep understanding of health systems and clinical operations including physician engagement
  • Self-guided, motivated, and able to simultaneously manage multiple activities with little direction in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong strategic thinking and business acumen with the ability to align clinical strategies and recommendations with business objectives to solve complex problems
  • Proven experience leading clinical variation implementation across large health systems resulting in significant recurring financial benefit
  • Understanding of financial and clinical data analytics with ability to translate output to operational stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to quantify financial impact of clinical initiatives and outcomes and establish ongoing benefit methodology
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including presenting to senior executives
  • Highly adept at handling ambiguity
  • Demonstrated ability to develop operating plans, lead cross-functional teams and mentor team members
  • Experience in a client account growth and relationship expansion role
  • Experience with project turnaround/remediation and change management methodology
  • Proven track record of working collaboratively with internal business partners and stakeholders across a highly matrixed organization
